8 Benefits of Dry Needling
with East West Wellness & Rehab

Decreases inflammation

Needles increase circulation to targeted regions, promoting the healing process and decreasing inflammation and pain. This is a popular treatment option for conditions such as Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, and bursitis.

Decreases pain

Research shows that dry needling can be effective in treating a variety of conditions such as chronic pain, tension headaches, and sports-related injuries. Dry needling can target trigger points to release local tension and promote blood flow, which enhances tissue healing and rejuvenation.

Improves range of motion

Creating microtrauma in injured tissue, dry needling can reset and relax muscle tissue, allowing for improved range of motion.

IMPROVED MUSCLE STRENGTH

Releasing trigger points and pain levels allows for proper muscle activation for greater strengthening.

Improved sleep

Dry needling decreases central and peripheral sensitization for improved quality of sleep. It can help with a range of health issues including anxiety, stress, depression, and insomnia to provide better sleep.

Decrease muscle tightness

Needling decreases muscle tightness by enhancing circulation and relaxing the targeted muscles. It uses microtrauma to reset the tissue and break up adhesions to release muscle tension.

PROMOTES HEALING

Through microtrauma, dry needling naturally stimulates the healing process and is an effective way to address injuries such as Achilles tendonitis, shoulder impingement, Golfer’s elbow, and knee pain

Improves scars

Dry needling can decrease tissue adhesions, including scars, created by past injuries. This method can help improve tissue elasticity, range of motion, and circulation in the affected area.

Why Dry Needling with East West Will Get You Results

Common Injuries We Can
Heal with Dry Needling

Dry needling is a safe and effective technique often used by physical therapists to help reduce muscle tension, promote blood flow, and decrease pain. It has helped many people improve their symptoms and return to their activities, pain-free and without limitations.

Dry needling uses a thin, sterile needle to target specific points in muscles, joints, and ligaments. While the needles used for dry needling are the same as the acupuncture needles, these two healing techniques are not the same. Acupuncture is based from traditional Chinese medicine practices to help the flow of energy (qi) within meridians, while dry needling uses Westernized principles to help promote the body's natural healing response in tissues.

Evidence-based research continues to show dry needling to be beneficial in many orthopedic, chronic, and neuromuscular conditions. Utilizing electrical stimulation alongside the needles has shown to promote even greater healing properties to help with pain relief, decreasing inflammation, stimulating blood flow, and improving sleep.

For the best results, we recommend dry needling to be used in combination with physical therapy. While dry needling may help with symptom relief, physical therapy allows us to address the root cause of the condition. It is important to follow-up with manual therapy, strengthening exercises, stretches and mobility movements, and patient education after dry needling.

FAQ

Have Questions about Dry Needling?

Dry needling can improve many conditions including:
  • Headaches
  • TMJ/Jaw pain
  • Neck pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Tennis elbow
  • Golfer's elbow
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Knee pain
  • Low back pain
  • Sciatica
  • Bursitis
  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • And more!
Since the needles used are very thin, most people do not feel the needle being inserted. Once placed on the specific point, patients may feel an aching if the area is more sensitive. If it is painful or uncomfortable, needles may be removed. Dry needling is always tailored to the patient's comfort level and what the patient can tolerate.
After dry needling, many patients may feel sore in the region needled. Soreness is comparable to the soreness following a challenging workout, and may persist for 1-2 days. To decrease the side effects, I recommend staying active and using ice/heat packs as needed. Other side effects may include tiredness or drowsiness due to the healing effects of dry needling.
For better results, dry needling is best used in combination with physical therapy. While dry needling may help with symptom relief, physical therapy allows us to address the root cause of the condition. Following up dry needling with manual therapy, strengthening/mobility exercises, and patient education allows for a quicker recovery period and longer-lasting results.
For most people, results can be seen following the first session with improved range of motion and decreased pain. However, four sessions are recommended in order to address the symptoms completely and to allow for proper progression of dosing.
Before your session, it's recommended to have a light snack and to hydrate. Please wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows for the body region to be easily accessed. Additionally, have all required forms completed prior to your appointment.
At the beginning of your dry needling session, we'll go safety precautions, expectations, and post-cupping protocol to provide a comfortable experience. For the dry needling portion, we can work up to two body parts depending on the regions. During the first session, the needles will stay on for about 10 minutes depending on the recommended dosage from out physical therapist. For the following sessions, dosage may be increased in either time duration, number of needles, or manipulation of needles. Additionally, an electrical stimulation machine may be used with the needles to promote increased healing. After dry needling is completed, we'll follow up with a little bit of soft tissue massage and loading to help decrease soreness. Lastly, we always provide patient education to allow for the best results with dry needling.
In the state of Virginia, you are not required to have a referral from a physician to receive dry needling.
